SSA is implemented as a flagship programme of GoI for universalizing elementary education. Its overall goal includes universal access and retention, bridging gender & social category gaps in education and enhancement of learning levels of children.It provides a variety of interventions inter-alia opening of new schools, alternate schooling facility, construction of schools,drinking water facility, textbooks etc.
The programme was launched in the State of J&K in the year 2002-03.
