DEPARTMENT OF FISHERIES

The District Kupwara is having  good resources of  water spread area in the shape of streams, rivers, springs and  Irrigation sars. Thus has  tremendous  scope for development in fisheries  sector both in trout and food fisheries.

Since the District hood was conferred to the District in 1979. The department of Fisheries has taken up number of initiatives for its development of Fisheries in the district. The initiatives viz, Construction of Carp Fish Farm at Kohru (Handwara), construction of Fish Seed Centre at Dewar Lolab, construction of Trout units at Kutlari Handwara and Suliman Tangdar and Stocking of Carp seed in the water bodies (Sars) of District in the areas like Lolab, Kandi, Handwara and Langate, has certainly promoted the trout and food fisheries in the far flung areas of the District. Similarly, stocking of world famous Brown and Rainbow Trout in the snow fed streams of District, e.g. Dringyari , Moori Kalarooch (Kupwara) and Mawar and  Hardkhi in Langate (Handwara)  have promoted Angling in the district. Among these Mawar and Dringyari streams are ready for trout angling for tourists  from within the country  and abroad.

Moreover, culture of fish in the private sector has been introduced and the people now by and large show keen interest in adopting fish culture under the guidance of Fisheries Department. So for 83 No’s of Carp ponds and 21 No’s of Trout units have been constructed in private sector, which have added to the economy of the people in far-off  areas of the district.

The energetic efforts are always in force to provide incentives like Housing, Nylon twine thread, Scholarship and Insurance coverage to the down trodden community (Mahigeers) of the society for the betterment of their livelihood.
